Method
Lessons are taught with encouragement and straightforward guidance, and are tailored individually to students of varying skill levels. For beginning students a strong emphasis is placed on building necessary coordination and establishing widely utilized playing techniques. Beginning students are also taught how to read music notation as it applies to percussion, basic music theory, and concepts such as tempo and syncopation. As students improve, more challenging material is introduced. For intermediate and advanced players, learning to play sophisticated grooves, challenging songs, advanced fills, and dynamic awareness is mphasized. Though many books are utilized, the following titles are often referred to: Syncopation for Drums (Alfred), Stick Control for the Snare Drummer (Alfred), Contemporary Drum Set Techniques (Rick Latham), A Funky Primer (Charles Dowd), Progressive Independence: Rock (Ron Spagnardi), The Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming (Bobby Rondinelli & Michael Lauren), Groove Essentials (Tommy Igoe). Instructional video content may be shown on an occasional basis. Students are also encouraged to bring music or learning materials specific to their goals.
